Children with special health care needs (SHCN) often require attention and care in addition to the routine dental services indicated by their age and oral health status. If your office welcomes a new patient with SHCN, you will need to assess whether your staff and facilities are able to accommodate the child's unique needs. Use the following checklist as a starting point to help you analyze your abilities:

  • Is your office accessible to people in wheelchairs?
  • If parents need help getting their child into the office from the parking lot, is there someone on the staff who can provide assistance?
