Communicating Through a Sign Language Interpreter
Communicating Through a Sign Language Interpreter

MCNA makes interpretation services, both in-person and via the telephone, available for appointments with our members at no cost to them or to your office. We understand that while these services are readily available, many dentists may not yet have taken part in an interpreted conversation, especially when sign language is being used. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion put together the following tips for communicating through a sign language interpreter.

  2. Be yourself; use your ordinary language and speaking style. Speak in the first person, just like you are having a normal voice-to-voice conversation. Avoid phrases like "Tell her," and "Explain to him."
  3. You may be used to watching an interpreter during an event when the interpreter stands in front facing an audience. Interpreting conversations is different in that the interpreter will be positioned next to you, so that the person who is deaf can glance at you both, picking up on your non-verbal cues.
  4. Speak in your normal tone, at your normal pace. The interpreter will tell you if you need to pause or slow down. If you use a word that the interpreter is unfamiliar with, he or she may ask you to spell it.
  5. If you have written notes or a treatment plan, it is helpful to offer a copy to the person who is ...
