Is your office prepared to deal with medical emergencies such as respiratory and circulatory disturbances or allergic reactions? An established and thorough medical emergency plan helps all members of your office staff recognize, respond to, and effectively manage a medical emergency should one arise. The following components should be included as a part of your office's plan:
- Current CPR procedure certification for the dentist(s) and at least one other staff member
- Annual staff training so all team members understand their individual responsibilities
- Emergency numbers posted in highly visible areas
- Members with medical risk clearly identified in advance of every appointment
In addition to what is listed above, all dental offices must have a portable source of oxygen with a positive demand valve, blood pressure cuff, and stethoscope. More information and training regarding medical emergencies in the dental office can be found on the American Dental Association's website. To learn more about safety requirements specific to your state, please consult with your state dental association.
