ADA Study finds COVID-19 Rate among Dentists Less Than 1%

A new study released by the American Dental Association Science & Research Institute and Health Policy Institute (ADASRI and HPI) found that less than 1% of dentists in the United States tested positive for COVID-19 as of June 2020. Researchers from ADASRI and HPIinvited dentists from all states and Puerto Rico to fill out a survey with COVID-19 questions, infection control procedures used in their dental practice, mental, and physical health conditions. The American Dental Association (ADA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to strongly recommend the usage of masks, goggles, and face shields for all dental professionals. The ADA guidance also recommends using high-velocity suction whenever possible, and utilizing hand scaling rather than ultrasonic scaling when cleaning teeth.

At the beginning of the pandemic, dentistry was named one of the most at-risk professions for infection, but the results of current studies have shown that the infectious rate amongst dental offices is much lower than that of other health professions. The dental profession has taken the virus very seriously and the ongoing implementation of the most stringent infection prevention and control procedures will ensure the continuing safety of dental staff and patients.
