  • What were the first toothbrushes like? They were made from tree twigs. People chewed on the tips of the twigs, which would spread out to clean their teeth. Some of the twigs used came from trees with medicinal properties. People used their "toothbrushes" a couple of times, then cut out the used part to start fresh. They carved out the other end and used it as a toothpick, as well.

When mixed with saliva, it makes the perfect toothpaste for whiter teeth. Other products used for teeth cleaning were pumice, talc, alabaster, coral powder, and iron.
  • It is a myth that George Washington had wooden teeth. His dentures were made of gold, hippopotamus tusk, and elephant ivory. He had only one remaining natural tooth when he became president of the United States. His wife Martha Washington also had similar dentures.
