New Guidance on Nondiscrimination in Telehealth

Technological advancements and the COVID-19 pandemic have drastically increased the importance of providing telehealth services and greatly expanded their use. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) partnered together to publish guidance on the protections in federal nondiscrimination laws as they relate to the provision of telehealth services.

This guidance helps to explain provider obligations in making telehealth accessible to people with disabilities and limited English proficiency. It also helps patients better understand their rights. It provides examples of actions that may be discriminatory and describes steps that providers may need to take to ensure that health care offered via telehealth is fully accessible. The guidance also has a list of resources for additional information about telehealth and civil rights protections for providers and patients.

For more information about providing fully accessible telehealth services to all, please explore the Guidance on Nondiscrimination in Telehealth prepared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
