Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts, created the original smiley face in 1963. The image of the smiley face became the most recognizable symbol of good will and cheer around the planet. Over time, Mr. Ball became concerned that the smiley face image was over commercialized, so he came up with the idea for World Smile Day. The intention behind this day is to remind us all that we should devote at least one day of the year to smiles and kind acts. Mr. Ball also wanted to emphasize that the smiley face knows no politics, no geography, and no religion. The first World Smile Day was celebrated in his hometown and around the world in 1999.
Join in the celebration this year and "Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile!"
