Recognizing Abuse and Neglect

Dentists are key in the identification of abuse and are mandated reporters of child abuse in all 50 states, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). The head, neck, and oral injuries that frequently result from abuse can sometimes be invisible to others, but are typically highly visible to dentists during a regular dental examination.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) requires all providers to report child or elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. All providers are expected to develop training for all staff on the policies and procedures regarding reporting child or elder abuse. Records of completion should be kept and presented upon request. If you suspect any signs of child or elder abuse, please call the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400.
