Stress Reduction Strategy: Focus on What You Can Control

During this stressful time, many people are experiencing anxiety about their health and the overall well-being of their families and friends. The heightened levels of uncertainty that we have to manage on a daily basis can feed our fears. One strategy to alleviate these negative feelings is to shift focus to things within our control to help us fight our anxieties and keep our stress levels low.

For example, if your main concern is your health, be sure you make a conscious effort to follow all recommendations, including washing your hands regularly, cleaning surfaces that you touch often, and practicing social distancing. If you are most worried about the future of your employment, you can take time to finally update your resume and start actively networking with your professional contacts. Switching gears to active problem-solving is the key to help you feel more prepared and in control of what the future may bring.

Here are a few more steps that you can try to reduce your overall stress and anxiety levels:

  • Move Your Body - Walking, running, dancing, jump roping, and roller blading are all good. Try to focus on the activity and be mindful of how each move affects your body.
  • Create Time for Relaxation - Yoga, deep breathing, tai chi, and meditation are techniques that will help you relax. Find one that feels right for you and practice regularly to recharge.
  • Get Good Sleep - An adequate amount of sleep every night helps to boost your immune system. Try to keep worries and distractions away from your sleep routine.
  • Make Home Cooking Your Superpower - A healthy diet can maintain high energy levels and help you avoid mood swings related to blood sugar levels. Avoid sugary and processed foods. Be sure to include foods rich in omega-3 fats such as mackerel, salmon, chia seeds, nuts, eggs, and avocado.

There are many resources available to help you navigate this unprecedented time. The ADA has recommended exploring the Care for Your Coronavirus Anxiety guide by Shine, and HelpGuide's Coronavirus Anxiety: Coping with Stress, Fear, and Uncertainty guide to learn more about what you can do to actively fight feelings of fear and anxiety, and care for your mental wellness.
