The Role of Dentists in the Current Vaping Spike

The American Dental Association (ADA), along with dentists, educators, and other health advocates, continues to work towards the full elimination of all tobacco products. In response to the current vaping epidemic, the ADA adopted a new interim policy on vaping last December. The policy calls for a total ban on the usage of all vaping products that are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the sole purpose of tobacco cessation.

While research on the effects of vaping on oral health continues, existing data suggests that vaping does not help tobacco users quit smoking. Vaping may also pose other physical dangers. There have been reported cases where vaping devices have overheated without warning and ultimately exploded, causing orofacial damage to the user.

Dentists can help patients improve their oral and overall health by asking about vaping during a regular checkup. This approach can identify patients who vape or smoke so that the dental team has the opportunity to share with patients the risks of vaping. It also opens the door to further discussion about tobacco cessation methods and creates an opportunity to encourage patients to follow up with their primary health care provider about supporting medication or behavioral counseling.
