National Childhood Obesity Month

September is National Childhood Obesity Month. There are many ways to promote healthy growth and prevent obesity in children. Children who struggle with obesity are at a much higher risk of suffering from asthma, sleep disorders, bone and joint problems, and type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, children with obesity are teased and bullied more than their normal weight peers. This can be the cause of social isolation, depression, and lower self-esteem.

Some factors that lead to childhood obesity are lack of exercise and sleep, easy access to inexpensive high-calorie foods and sugary beverages, and lack of access to affordable, healthier foods. Parents can provide nutritious, low calorie foods such as fruits and veggies to support the healthy growth of their children. These are also great choices for healthy teeth and gums!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate app is a great resource for families to learn how to build healthy habits, set goals, see real-time progress, and earn fun badges! To find out more about the app, please visit https://www.choosemyplate.gov/. We can all work together and encourage children to make healthier food choices for better oral and overall health for life.
