MCNA's Performance Improvement Projects

Performance Improvement Projects (PIPs) are essential to quality improvement. Each year, MCNA's Quality Improvement Department selects study topics for our PIPs based on the unique needs of our members. For each PIP topic selected, intervention activities are designed that help overcome barriers to access and care at the member, provider, and systems levels. Our interventions often involve multiple forms of outreach to members and providers, such as targeted member text message reminders for care or personalized provider education during onsite visits with MCNA Provider Relations Representatives.

Our current PIP topics for the Texas Medicaid and CHIP programs are:

  • Increasing the rate of children accessing a dentist and receiving age-appropriate sealants
    • Measure: Annual Dental Visit; sealants, elevated risk for caries for members ages 6-9; sealants, elevated risk for caries for members ages 10-14
  • Establishing a collaborative partner relationship, inclusive of a data sharing agreement, to target and reduce the volume of children visiting the Emergency Department for dental-related potentially preventable visits (PPVs)
    • Measures: establish partner MCO; data sharing agreement; documented process flows

MCNA reviews monthly reports to monitor utilization rates for our PIP measures. Each quarter, these report metrics are compiled and reported to MCNA's Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) to track progress toward PIP goals. The QIC provides feedback, including suggestions about the chosen interventions, to further increase utilization rates for the measures. Our PIP workgroup reviews all feedback and creates, modifies, or retires interventions as necessary.

If you have questions about MCNA's PIPs or would like to get involved in our quality improvement efforts, please call our Provider Hotline at 1-855-776-6262 (8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Central Time, Monday through Friday).
