Father's Day - June 20
Father's Day - June 20

Sonora Dodd is recognized as the founder of Father's Day. This holiday was celebrated for the first time on June 19, 1910, in the State of Washington. Families wore red roses as badges to celebrate and honor their fathers. In remembrance of fathers who were deceased, they wore white roses. Dodd drew up a petition arguing that Father's Day should be celebrated on her father's birthday, which was in early June. At the time, the petition earned only two signatures, but she was eventually able to convince several local churches to participate in the holiday on the condition that the celebration be pushed to the second Sunday in June. This allowed the community more time to prepare, since Mother's Day was celebrated two weeks earlier. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed an order making Father's Day a national holiday celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.
