Thanksgiving

In 1621 the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Native Americans shared an autumn harvest feast. Today this is acknowledged as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, Thanksgiving was celebrated by individual colonies and states. It was not until the middle of the Civil War when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Unfortunately, no record exists of the first Thanksgiving menu. Historians believe that the dishes were prepared with Native American spices and cooking methods. The Pilgrims had no oven and sugar supplies were low. Therefore, their festive meal did not feature pies, cakes, or other desserts. They have probably just enjoyed some wild fruits.

MCNA wishes you a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and favorite dishes!
