WHO Makes Oral Health a Global Priority

On May 27, health ministries from around the world approved a resolution that puts oral health back on the global agenda. The resolution was also approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) committee and focuses on the importance of oral health to overall health and well-being. Once fully adopted, WHO will urge member states to act and address the risk factors affecting poor oral health. This will be a major shift to a prevention-first treatment model and will ensure that oral healthcare services are an integral part of universal healthcare coverage.

The resolution requests the development of a global strategy and action plan in the next two years. Additionally, the resolution urges member states to help oral health professionals detect and report cases of neglect and abuse. Member states are also required to strengthen collaboration around oral health issues in key areas such as schools and workplaces.

Approximately 50% of the world's population has at least one oral disease, which are largely preventable. Changes in policies and health systems that prioritize oral care like this resolution are a necessary step to positively affect global oral health.
