Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect

Dentists are key in the identification of abuse, and are mandated reporters of child abuse in all 50 states, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). The head, neck, and oral injuries that frequently result from abuse can sometimes be invisible to others, but remain highly visible to dentists during a regular dental examination.

The ADA supports education for dental professionals that includes training to recognize abuse and neglect and the proper channels for reporting suspected cases when identified. The entire office team should be attentive to the signs and ready to act on suspicions according to office and community standards. The ADA offers a free, online continuing education course to member dentists wishing to learn more. The course provides an overview of the child welfare system, child abuse reporting laws, risk factors and research on human trafficking of minors, and the role dentists and other professionals play in the protection of children.
